Lowering the brass in the Huon Valley

Saturday August 7th 2021 - the world premiere of the Overland Ensemble at the Franklin Palais Theatre. Overland Ensemble is the newest ensemble of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and comprises the low brass - tenor trombones, bass trombones and tuba.

David Robins, Iain Faragher, Mitchell Nissen and Tim Jones made the foray down with Gap In The Fence as producer/tour manager, to present a masterclass/workshop with 16 members of the Huon Valley and Cygnet Area Concert Bands including lots of youngsters. The gents proved themselves not only to be human but hilarious! The evening concert to a full house included a wide repertoire from Bach, Debussy, Tomasi, Verhelst and Gershwin and included Tim Jones' own 'The Mountain', soon to be released by ABC Classics. The evening was closed off with an encore of 20 brass musicians squeezed onto the stage to play to short pieces composed for the occasion by Tim. Feedback from the audience included pleasant surprise at the range and nuance of the instruments and the excellent musicianship of the Ensemble. Next stop Cooee in late August.
